Hideyuki Tanaka is an artist, designer and art director based in Tokyo, Japan,

who emerged as a key figure in the Japanese commercial and visual arts scene during the 90’s and 00’s. He founded the creative studio FrameGraphics, which most of his work is produced through.

Originally influenced by Showa era manga artists like Tezuka Osamu( Astroboy) and Fujio Akatsuka (Osomatsu-kun and Tensai Bakabon), Tanaka would combine iconic cartoon character design ideas and retro futurism with modern ideas of technology to create a unique vision.

At the forefront of the Harajuku fashion scene, he began designing characters and graphics for his brother’s clothing label Super Lovers . Super Lovers would gain international prominence when celebrity chef Jamie Oliver began wearing their clothes on the Naked Chef tv show.

Tanaka would go on to be creative director and producer of the classic groundbreaking video games series for PlayStation, Bust a Groove (1998-1999).

In January 2000, FrameGraphics, produced the original anime OH! Super Milk-chan . It became an immediate hit and eventually aired in the USA on Adult Swim, becoming a cult hit.

Tanaka has designed and supervised visual looks for albums and campaigns for many musical artists like Denki Groove, JUDY AND MARY for whom the characters designed by Hideyuki Tanaka became their identity, AKB48, Kyary Pamyu Pamyu, Charli XCX, A.G. Cook, The 1975, and YUKI.

In addition to his graphic work, Tanaka is also a prolific commercial and music video director.

Recently, Tanaka has collaborated with Marc Jacobs for his fashion line, HEAVEN.

About Super Milk Chan

Animated by Studio Pierrot and directed and produced by Tanaka , OH! Super Milk-chan, became an immediate hit among anime fans and adult audiences. There was nothing like it on Japanese TV at the time. It’s acid sense of humor, featuring a bratty cute girl who was stingy and insulting and ate a lot of junk food, elevated it to cult status and it eventually made it’s way to the United States and aired on Adult Swim. Recently, it has made a resurgence with a new generation of fans.
