To celebrating the imaginative worlds of acclaimed artist, animator, and filmmaker Leo Matsuda.
Warriors and Demons showcases a collection of original artworks exploring mythology, folklore, heroes, monsters, and the eternal struggle between light and darkness. Drawing upon influences from both Japanese and Brazilian culture, Matsuda’s work combines masterful draftsmanship, cinematic storytelling, and a playful sense of imagination.
This exhibition offers a rare opportunity to experience Leo’s personal artwork outside of animation production and gain insight into the creative mind behind some of modern animation’s most memorable stories.
Leo has prepared over 50 works that showcase his creative output over the last decade.
Each piece has been worked in ink, colored pencils , and watercolors over a giclee print base.
Known for his dynamic storytelling and distinctive visual style, Leo Matsuda is a Japanese-Brazilian artist whose career has spanned some of the animation industry’s most beloved studios and productions.
A graduate of CalArts, Matsuda worked on films including The Simpsons Movie, Rio, Wreck-It Ralph, Big Hero 6, and Zootopia. He also made history as the first Brazilian director at Walt Disney Animation Studios, writing and directing the acclaimed animated short Inner Workings, which premiered in theaters alongside Disney’s Moana.
