We are extremely excited to announce our next upcoming art show celebrating one of the most iconic manga/anime of all time, Doraemon. The story of a young boy named Sewashi Nobi who sends back an anthropomorphic robotic cat (Doraemon) to aid his financially-troubled family, Doraemon has resonated with audiences across the globe, and remains one of the most successful manga of all time. Part of the reason Doraemon has touched so many people from different backgrounds, is perhaps that the story’s main character, Sewashi Nobi, is not your classic hero but a regular boy with the simple ambitions to help his troubled family—granted, he goes about this in quite a fantastic way. Doraemon serves as one of the earliest examples of science fiction in manga. The stories revolve around Doraemon’s futuristic gadgets, which unfortunately usually end up causing more trouble than good.

About Tatsunoko Pro:
Specializing in television production, since its formation in 1962, Tatsunoko helped launch Japanese animation onto the international stage, with hit titles like Speed Racer, Time Bokan series, Gatchaman, and Super Dimension Fortress Macross.
In addition to its strong list science-fiction titles, Tatsunoko became famous for its fairy-tale and fantasy series like Minashigo Hutch and The Adventures of Pinocchio. The adaptation of class western stories like the story of Pinocchio and Robin Hood is another characteristic feature of Tatsunoko. Some of Japan’s top animation studios have their roots in Tatsunoko as former employees.
It was founded in October 1962 by anime pioneer Tatsuo Yoshida along with his brothers Kenji and Toyoharu (or by the pen name “Ippei Kuri”).The studio’s name has a double meaning in Japanese of “Tatsu’s child” (Tatsu being a nickname for Tatsuo) and “sea dragon”, which was the inspiration for its seahorse corporate logo.
From comedy to science-fiction, Tatsunoko’s amazing list of productions spans multiple genres.

Q POP wants to invite you to come to the opening night of the “Sound + Vision: Album Cover Show.”

Since the early days of Modernism, the interplay between art and music has given considerable impetus to the development of new art forms. Even Plato recognized a special connection between eye and sound.

What better way to explore this relationship than through the art of the album cover.
Artists will create a visual representation of the music that they pick that resonates with them ..The artworks would reflect and describe the concepts and ideas contained within the album.

“Tokusatsu 2: Revenge of the Kaiju”
Opening Reception: Saturday, November 16, 2013, 7pm-10pm

art by Konatsu
Tokusatsu 2: Revenge of the Kaiju” is the second annual celebration of the Tokusatsu genre and comes in time to help mark the third anniversary of Q Pop Shop opening its doors in Little Tokyo in Los Angeles, CA. On Saturday, November 16th, the gallery will open its doors from 7pm to 10pm for an opening reception and the show will end on Sunday, December 1st.
Originating from the words tokushu satsuei (迚ケ谿頑聴蠖ア special photography) this genre is known for utilizing various special effects. For those of you who grew up watching shows such as Godzilla, Ultraman, Kikaider, as well as many others, this is a great opportunity to celebrate your favorite shows and characters. For those of you who are less familiar with this genre, this is a great opportunity to get to know this amazing and influential genre of film and TV. Those less familiar might not even realize they have grown up with the shows, such as Super Sentai that was adapted for US audiences and well known as Mighty Morphin Power Rangers.
Q Pop has always strived to showcase the work of local and international artists, as well as artists of many different mediums and this show is no different. From traditional works to sunae (sand art), metal sculptures to needlefelting, plushes to wearable art, emerging artists to reknown artists, Q Pop hopes to expand what people view as art and introduce them to those they may not have heard of yet with all our group shows.

Come see new art by Bwana Spoons and Michelle Valigura! Meet these two artists in person and see them FUCK SHIT UP.

Gallery opening reception is June 22 from 7pm – 10pm, but the show itself will run through to the end of the month.

Disclaimer: please do not FUCK SHIT UP in our store. We appreciate it 😉

BWANA SPOONSBwana Spoons is an artist all the way thru the brain and into the guts. He is a painter, illustrator, and toy maker. Bwana has his works featured on just about anything imaginable, from cars, to strollers, to shoes. His artwork has been featured around the globe from his current hometown of Portland, to San Francisco, Los Angles, New York, to Japan, Spain, London, Paris, and a few parts in between. His favorite form of art these days is the installation working with wood and painting large scale murals. When Bwana isn’t doing any of this you can find him running his gallery, Grass Hut Art Market or tinkering away in his self made studio in Portland Oregon.MICHELLE VALIGURA
Brought up in Washington state Michelle learned from a very early on to fear and respect all aspects of the earth (fishing with her dad in the summer and running from bullies the rest of the year). In 1998, eager to create a much needed new path far from the dark seedy projection booths she had spent the last 5 years working in, an obvious choice was to move to the land of eternal sunlight, Los angeles.
She found her way into stop-motion animation some of her credits include the Simpsons and Elf. The progression to fine art sculpture and eventually ceramics was perhaps the most fluid and self realizing moment throughout her very sordid career. Her work is shown in museums and galleries in all corners of the globe including Disneyland USA.
Along with Amanda Visell, she is “the other one” of  the design collective called Switcheroo.
She is very honored to have found her way back to basics, of what she feels is the most simple and complex art forms, playing with dirt.
The end.

AFFIRMATIONS FOR PESSIMISTS by CHRIS RECCARDI : Book release and signing SAT MAY 18

Do you like ugly, silly drawings? Ever get annoyed by lame socially-acceptable sayings such as “…don’t take it personally.” or “…you need to practice self-acceptance?” Ever feel guilty that you’re just too crappy a person for real affirmations of love and kindness and prefer to just say something uncomfortably appropriate to everyday challenging situations? You get all the above with award-winning Animator/Fine Artist Chris Reccardi’s new publication “Affirmations for Pessimists”, an illustrated book of hideous drawings paired with delightfully cynical quotes that we all think but usually don’t say (out loud). Some of them don’t even go together. Who cares.

Chris’ new self-published book Afirmations for Pessimists will be available for purchase at Q Pop on opening night.
Chris will be in attendance and will be signing copies of the book at 8PM.

To coincide with the release, 34 pieces of artwork from the book will be on display and available for purchase in limited 12″ x 12″ format.

Chris Reccardi is an award-winning and Emmy-nominated animator and fine artist. Chris has played the role of designer, director, animator, writer/creator and musician on such popular animated shows as “The Ren & Stimpy Show”, “Spongebob Squarepants”, “The Powerpuff Girls”, “Samurai Jack” and theatrical features such as “Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs”(Sony Pictures) and “Shrek 3 & 4″(DreamWorks). His fine art and prints have an international collector base with past exhibitions in Los Angeles, Palm Springs, Seattle, Sydney and Amsterdam. An avid musician, Chris is currently serving as bassist and art director for Elliot Easton’s Tiki Gods, a newly-formed exotica music group headed by ex-The Cars guitarist Elliot Easton.

All works are available for purchase and preview in the Q Pop webstore!!

Please join us in welcoming Japanese artist NAOSHI who will be showcasing her new artwork.NAOSHI creates her artwork out of shiny colored sand. A technique called “Sunae” in japanese.
Her whimsical and surreal pop imagery, delicate and dynamic, often depicts humans combined with fruit and vegetables in realistic and unrealistic natural environments.APAK is Aaron and Ayumi Piland . They are a child-like husband and wife collaborative art team who live among the fury conifer giants in a little cottage on the outskirts of Portland, Oregon. Since 2005 they have created artwork together as a way of exploring the beauty, mystery, and magic of life as well as expressing their love for life and each other. They are known in particular for creating rich and colorful gouache/acrylic paintings on wood featuring the utopian lives and adventures of curious little beings living in lush fantastic environments surrounded by friendly little animals. It is their goal to bring something fresh, beautiful, and meaningful into the world in hopes of inspiring the next generation to live simply, peacefully, and in harmony with nature and each other.MINIFANFAN is a malaysian chinese artist currently residing in Kuala Lumpur. Her work often depicts human animal hybrids or anthropomorphized animals interacting with people. Her sweet images conjure a pure and ideal relationship between the two. Minifanfan often works in old school traditional techniques and enjoys things “handmade”.Leana Rudish is an LA based artist that currently works in fabric. She creates wonderful quilted images from vintage and contemporary pieces of fabric creating a cute and textured vision. Often her subjects are animals and humanistic characters like dwarves and gnomes and they populate her world in peace and harmony.Jasmin Lai is a taiwanese artist based in the San Francisco bay area primarily working in digital mediums. Her subjects often include natural landscapes and/or the people that populate them to create stylized architectural pieces that also have a great deal of warmth and charm.Michelle Park is a Korean LA based artist who also works in digital. Her illustrative pieces involve strong references to nature and also to architectural interiors marrying the two into a stylized unity.Artist NAOSHI wil be in attendance from Japan.
Artists Leana Rudish and Michelle Park will also be in attendance.Reception is on March 9 7PM-10PM
